About Rye

Old Rye Town

Rye was one of the cinque (pronounced 'sink') ports - an ancient federation of the most important towns on England's south-east coast. The town was originally on a peninsula, and reached by a ferry. The sea, which once lapped at Rye's back doorstep, receded long ago. Now only the fishing boats and pleasure craft on the River Rother recall Rye's nautical roots.

Up the hill from the river, the cobbled streets and quiet winding passages have lost none of their charm with the passing of time. They make exploring the town on foot a pleasure, with surprises round every corner. It's hard to believe that within the 14th century walls of such a small town there's room for a castle, a monastery, a 12th century church and several historic inns.

For those seeking a souvenir of their visit, there are numerous shops selling antiques, arts and crafts and books. For the weary, refreshment is not hard to find: traditional tea shops and pubs beckon from every corner.

Around Rye

The town of Rye lies at the heart of Romney Marsh. Once the haunt of smugglers, the marsh is today a haven for wildlife and contented sheep graze on its rich pastures. Countless footpaths criss-cross the marsh and energetic visitors can walk for days without ever retracing their steps.

Though Rye is no longer an important port, the sea is only a couple of miles away. Nearby Camber Sands is without a doubt the finest bathing beach in south-east England. To the west, Hastings still has a flourishing fishing trade, with colourful boats pulled up on the shingle beach.

Rye is also well-placed as a touring base. It's easy reach of some of England's finest stately homes and gardens, and London is less than 90 minutes away by train. Bodium Castle, Batemans and Sissinghurst and Great Dixter Gardens are all close. France, too, is near enough for a day trip for the Channel Tunnel entrance is less than an hour away.
